Australian musician and audiovisual artist Robin Fox creates immersive experiences through his performances that combine laser and sound and transport the spectator into a sphere where light and music operate as one. Fox’s practice has been to connect sound with visual apparati and let the former dictate the output of the latter; creating an exact visual representation of the sound itself. In his oscilloscope works, for example, Fox illustrates how different sonic textures produce different visual correlates (the collection can be seen on DVD, titled Backscatter, 2004). Fox: “It's interesting when you work in noise or experimental music or whatever you want to call it, there's a level of abstraction that removes it from the linguistic paradigms of music. [...] When you work outside those linguistic musical paradigms it's often difficult to convince anyone that there's any sense to what you're doing. That abstraction can often alienate people.” Fox has worked together with various musicians, composers, and dance companies, and his work Laser Show, a synchronisation of sound and visual electricity in hyper-amplified 3D, has been performed in over 50 cities worldwide, including at the Yokohama Triennial, Musica Genera Festival,Warsaw; MUTEK, Montreal; Donau Festival, Krems; Mona Foma, Hobart; and Festival Nemo, Paris, amongst others. Fox’s recent sound work Interior Design: Music for the Bionic Ear, in association with the Australian Network for Art and Technology and the Bionic Ear Institute, was shortlisted for a Future Everything award in the UK 2011 and selected by the Paris Rostrum of Composers in 2012. Projects include designing and building Giant Theremin for the City of Melbourne, a seven metre tall interactive musical sculpture; the White Beam project commissioned by Dark Mofo that shot a high powered white laser beam through the trees on Salamanca lawns; developing a hybrid sound/dance work with Stephanie Lake involving fire powered kinetic musical sculptures for 2013 Melbourne Festival; and sound/light design for Lee Serle’s SYNC at the Lyon Opera Ballet. In addition, Fox’s work has featured at festivals and public art events, including at Henie Onstad Kunstcenter, Oslo, 2010; Mois Multi Festival, Quebec City, 2010; and Steirischer Herbst Festival, Graz, 2009. Video and photographic works were on view at Centre for Contemporary Photography and Design, Melbourne, 2010; RoslynOxley9 gallery, Sydney; The Asian Art Biennale in Taipei, the Miniartextil International exhibition, Como; and the Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung, Bonn, as part of “Geometric Form seen in Recent Sound”. Fox has contributed to the work Mortal Engine receiving a Helpmann award for best visual production and an honourable mention at the the illustrious Prix Ars Electronica 2009 in collaboration with the Chunky Move Dance Company. Fox also has released 3 albums together with composer and performer Anthony Pateras and one with double bassist Clayton Thomas. The artist holds a MA in Musicology and a PhD in Composition from Monash University, Melbourne. Fox lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
