Ben McDonnell & Nemo Nonnenmacher

London

Ben McDonnell and Nemo Nonnenmacher are an artist duo, collaborating on making use of 3D scans, game engines and video, made in a shared virtual ‘studio’ environment.

McDonnell and Nonnenmacher met while studying in the photography programme at the Royal College of Art, London in 2015. Both artists have maintained a dialogue around their individual practices, interested in themes of digital materiality and the possibilities of virtual spaces. They shared a studio in London between 2017-2020 and were invited to an artist residency at Outset Contemporary Art Fund in Baker Street, London in 2018. They have recently exhibited work together in ‘Passengers’ at the Brunswick Centre, London. Nonnenmacher has recently relocated to Greece and McDonnell works between Manchester and London. The inability to share a space IRL engendered a continuation of the collaborative process that the artists had initiated but in virtual space.

Nemo Nonnenmacher is a visual artist based in Europe. He currently works between London, UK and Agios Nikolaos, West Mani, GR. Nonnenmacher earned a degree in Photography from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Dortmund and holds a Master of Arts from the Royal College of Art, London.

Ben Mcdonnell graduated with a master's degree in photography from the Royal College of Art In 2017, his undergraduate degree was in jazz composition and performance from Leeds College of Music. As such Mcdonnell's practices use photography, sound and sculpture to raise questions around stability, support and structure. He draws inspiration from sound, music and the built environment as well as his research into pedagogic practices. Mcdonnell is a lecturer on the photography MA and BA(Hons) programme at Manchester School of Art and a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths University.
