Saturation is a collection that explores human perception of colour and the systems that have been created to describe and classify them. The three video works in the collection combine live action, algorithmically generated images, and text to reveal the different ways in which frequencies of light are named, numbered or perceived as shades of red, green or blue (RGB). The notion of a colour, with its psychological and art historical associations, is examined in the works, which at the same time cause sensory responses in the viewer. This dual process is revealed as different combinations of colour, movement and form come together to generate new combinations. The Saturation collection is a series of digital editions by Matthew Biederman, an American artist based in Montreal. Since the 1990s, Biederman has explored perception in relation to data systems through a diverse practice which incorporates elements of community engagement, performance and technologies.
