In the second half of 2019, the work of British artist and cinematographer Terry Flaxton is celebrated in three exhibitions in the UK and Turkey.
Until 6 October a multi-screen installation by Flaxton is on display as part of Reformation, a group exhibition at the Bishops Palace in Wells, Somerset highlighting the work of prominent artists and makers from the West Country.
Flaxton’s work in the exhibition is The Intersection of Dreams, a restaging of Christ of St John of the Cross by Salvador Dali. The work is concerned with the state of the world being passed on to future generations and is part of a series of three works which look at the impact of globalised control networks and the restriction of rights and freedoms. The three works, The Intersection of Dreams, The Resurrection of Dreams and The Reinvention of Dreams, form the triumvirate work Heretics Gate. The Intersection of Dreams, which has previously been exhibited at Bristol Cathedral and New York’s Cathedral of St John the Divine, is here shown in a new iteration created specially for Reformation.
Radiant Sound Radiant Light
From 28 September to 1 December another project by Flaxton, Radiant Sound, Radiant Light, is on display at the 167th Annual Open Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. The project is presented in three iterations across two spaces. In the first space, a sound piece titled RADIANT SOUND: Entertaining Messrs. Satie, Milhaud, Stockhausen, Cage, Ligeti, Hills, Marshall, Wesley-Barker & Mme. Monk with 4mins 33 seconds of Prepared Sound plays on suspended parabolic speakers. This piece is an experiment in Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, a phenomenon wherein people feel sound through. In the second space, a video piece titled RADIANT LIGHT: Entertaining Messrs. Satie, Milhaud, Stockhausen, Cage, Ligeti, Hills, Marshall, Wesley-Barker & Mme. Monk with 4mins 33 seconds of Prepared Sound and Light plays in two versions, both on screens. The first version includes only visuals while the second also incorporates the sound piece RADIANT SOUND.
In mid-November, Flaxton presents an exhibition at the Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival in Turkey where he will show his latest work plus some work from earlier this year. He will also take part in panel discussions during the event - more info on the festival programme will be announced on 25 September.
