From 18 January to 16 March arebyte Gallery presents a group exhibition curated by Kelani Nichole of TRANSFER. Re-Figure Ground features the work of Morehshin Allahyari, LaTurbo Avedon, Snow Yunxue Fu, Carla Gannis, Claudia Hart, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Pussykrew, Sabrina Ratté, Amina Ross, and Alan Warburton.
The exhibition is the first in arebyte’s 2019 programme, Home. The programme looks at themes and notions surrounding home, with particular emphasis on exploring dislocation from home and identity, how otherworldly and globally-networked spaces connect to domestic settings, and new ecologies for future ways of living which are resistant to corporate homogeneity. Re-Figure Ground examines the unstable distinction between the real and the fake, and what opportunities this instability provides for more fluid and amorphous concepts of myth, identity and the body.
Nude Descending a Staircase , Carla Gannis, 2015
The increasingly granular influence of algorithms deployed by governments and corporations has distorted the distinction between public and private, leisure and work. Marketing has thoroughly infiltrated the home and makes its impact daily upon our bodies and identities as we engage with the world around us. At the same time we have access to a bewildering and exciting array of simulated worlds (again built on algorithms, but this time from more varied sources) through which we can access, inhabit and become exploratory non-binary identities.
Re-Figure Ground brings together the work of artists who are working subversively with simulation, delving into, dismantling and repurposing digitally rendered words. In doing so they work actively with the algorithmic driving forces of contemporary society while looking critically at the idealism of Silicon Valley. The exhibition connects CGI, artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies and proposes exploratory strategies for future engagement with the algorithmically mediated world.
