Two solo works by Kurokawa are on display, as is a piece made by the Ryoichi Kurokawa & Novi_sadin collaboration. Two of the works in the exhibition are also available as digital editions on the Sedition Art platform.
Titled Sirens, the collaborative piece features audio by Novi_sad and visuals by Ryoichi Kurokawa. The piece is a visual and sonic exploration of the aesthetics of data and is developed using data from financial markets. The more the economy fails (as represented by data and, indexes, the more developed and complex the work’s sequences become. Any disintegration of financial fortunes leads directly to the emergence of a greater creative energy in an inverse ‘tug-of-war’ Sirens elucidates the relationship between generative visualisation and cinematic practices, and heightens the performativity of processes, be they ‘technological’ or ‘natural’. Sirens is available as a collection of digital artworks on Sedition; those who purchase the collection also receive a printed book and audio CD from the project.

Also featured in the exhibition is Kurokawa’s 8 minute, looped composition unfold.alt, which is displayed as a 3 channel HD video projection and surround sound. Kurokawa worked with astrophysicists to produce the work, which uses data from the formation of stars to visualise stellar birth. unfold.alt combines artistic license with scientific detail; this combination makes enormous, incomprehensible events more tangible and is also a reminder of the limits of human understanding.
The final work on display is constrained surface by Kurokawa. This work examines the phenomenon of synaesthesia, the condition where a sensation in one of the senses triggers a sensation in another. This results in unexpected experiences and alternative ways of processing the world. constrained surface carefully combines colour, light, sound and movement in a painterly experiment which treats framing, articulation and sensing as processes and plays with them, never allowing the technological elements to overshadow the expression within the piece, but rather enhance the artistic experience, creating moments of surprise and wonder.
