This Spring Adham Faramawy and Shu Lea Cheang have presented work in a group exhibition at London’s Science Gallery. GENDERS: Shaping and Breaking the Binary also features work by Phoebe Davies, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Mary Maggic, Sadé Mica, Gaby Sahhar, Fannie Sosa, Soofiya and Puck Verkade.

The works in the exhibition combine art and science to examine concepts, materialisations and performances of gender from varied perspectives. GENDERS has been presented at a time when the male-female gender binary is being dismantled. In the age of the algorithm the binaries which kept people ‘in their place’ are no longer relevant; instead of two genders, the works explore gender as fluid, amorphous and inter-species.

Faramawy presents Skin Flick (Invasive Species), a video piece which explores the changeability of gender and the links between human and non-human sexuality. The artist speaks reflectively about gender identity; these reflections accompany moving imagery relating to sex and reproduction in plants and fungi, invertibrates and animals.

As Future Baby Production, Shu Lea Cheang and Ewen Chardronnet present a performance and installation exploring cyborg parenting and the growth of foetuses in artificial wombs. UNBORN0X9 features an open-source ultrasound scanner which can be used on smartphones; the scanner uses ultrasonic waves to create an inaudible, ultrasonic score and accompanying audio-visuals. The piece unfolds interactions between these compositions, performers, musicians and three artificial wombs. It is produced by Antre-Peaux/UrsuLaB in association with Labomedia, echOpen and Makery.
