The Fractions of Time Collection presents Enzo Roff’s ongoing exploration of the video still life. Inspired by the work of old masters and versed in contemporary moving image techniques, Roff investigates and reveals the point at which stillness becomes movement. Traditional still life paintings often include animals, flowing water or the effect of wind on fabric, but their movement can only be hinted at, never realised. Roff’s compositions teeter at the edge of, then cross, this threshold, drawing emphasis simultaneously to the complexity of motion and to the patterns and forms which exist often unnoticed in a landscape.
Much of Roff’s work is captured in high definition video following extensive observation of a landscape. Sound and movement are minimal. Each of the works in the Fractions of Time Collection forms a perpetual loop; when the sequence is repeated, it appears to continue seamlessly forever.
